Other Flex Considerations .....
For All Faculty

Flex and Class Time
Most of our institutional presentations occur during the January intersession, but many others are offered during the fall and spring semesters. By doing this we hope to provide faculty and staff with opportunities throughout the year to attend those presentations which are of particular interest. We also hope these activities will attract a number of students. It is important to remember, however, that classes cannot be canceled to attend these events. On the other hand, if the material is relevant to your class, you are encouraged to bring students to the presentation, but you cannot claim Flex credit.

The Flex Budget
The Flex budget is used solely to promote and support our institutionally planned program, and these funds are committed during May for the following year's guest speakers or other costs. However, regardless of the amount budgeted to the Flex Committee, Administration may decide at anytime overrule committee decisions regarding the allocation of budgeted funds. If AVC presenters need funds for supplies or special equipment for an institutional presentation, you need to obtain a "request for funding" form from Mary Kelsay and submit it to the Flex Committee. While we recognize the importance of individual projects, we cannot fund them. If a faculty member needs funding for an individual activity or project he or she may apply to staff development, but this in no way guarantees that funding will be available through that committee.

Flex and Sabbatical Leave
If a faculty member is on sabbatical leave for one semester, he/she is responsible for only 30 hours of Flex time and still needs to submit a plan and completion form (10 hours for institutional Flex; 20 hours for individual Flex). This obligation, however, can be fulfilled at any time during the school year.

Flex and Mentoring or Club Advising
The college has a number of mentoring programs for probationary faculty, adjunct faculty, minority students, and high-risk students, as well as numerous student clubs. Faculty members who wish to be mentors or club advisors and build this into their Flex program can claim up to 20 hours of individual Flex time.

Changes to the Flex Program
At the end of each year, you will have a chance to evaluate the merits of the Flex program and express your views prior to its being put in place for the following academic year. Since the Flex Committee is a standing committee of the Academic Senate, you may also let your Senators know how you or your division feels. You may also communicate your concerns to any of the Flex Committee members. Finally, two other possibilities exist: join the Flex Committee or apply for the chair's position.

Flex Requests
Any individual who has a question or concern for the Flex Committee should submit a written request two weeks prior to the next Flex meeting so that there will be an opportunity to review and respond in a timely manner.

Office Hours
Adjunct faculty may use office hours to meet their Flex obligation if compensation is not received. The following table will show the allowable hours for eligible faculty who elect to participate in the Office Hour Program. This will apply to all faculty who teach during the summer and intersession.
