Recently the popularity of poker has exploded, taking the game of chance from smoke filled back rooms to the mainstream. Big money poker tournaments are shown on a number of networks and Positively Fifth Street, James MacManus first-hand account of his participation and eventual fifth-place finish in the 2000 World Series of Poker at Binions Horseshoe in Las Vegas, was a national best seller. This presentation will examine the appeal of the game as well as its appearance in literature and film. The evening will also include an explanation of the basic rules and terminology of the game and will culminate in a no-limit Texas Holdem Tournament to determine who has the nuts and who is dead money.
